Title: Telling Tales & Talking Trails, One Minute Storytellers, Brighton Museum web app
Volunteers: 6 or 8
Hours: 2-3 hours p/week to start with (Flexible)
Days: Flexible: Initial workshop will be a weekday
Location: Brighton Museum, volunteering digital writing can also take place remotely
Time Frame: September to December 2023
Closing date: 5 September 2023

Purpose of role

We are building a team of volunteers to help us create stories for our One Minute webapp in Brighton Museum.

One Minute is a new way of telling stories in museums. Each story is revealed by the visitor scanning a QR Code beside an exhibit. The story is told in bite-sized chunks and will take no more than 60 seconds to read.

We’re looking for volunteers to help us tell these stories. Whether you have a favourite object or an enthusiasm for a topic, we want to get your stories told to our visitors.

Task

Our volunteers will mainly be writing stories for the One Minute webapp, using specially designed software to guide them through the writing process.

Location

All the on-site volunteer work will take place in Brighton Museum. It is possible that some writing and editing may be carried out at home. We will loan equipment to support this where possible.

Support and supervision

The project will be led by staff from the B&H Museums. Although external specialists may lead on specific tasks, a member of B&HM’s staff will be responsible for supervising volunteers.

The B&H Museums Volunteer Manager will also be available to discuss any issues that may arise on a one-to-one basis.

Benefits of role

You will work as part of a team of enthusiastic people who are looking to improve our visitor offer, and you will learn new skills along the way. This project will be a chance to inform and tell stores within a museum environment and work with new digital technology.
We will provide training and guidance. If you wish to use this experience to improve your employment prospects or career ambitions, we will happily supply a reference for any future job applications you may make.

Personal qualities and requirements

We are looking for volunteers with a keen interest in history, art, fashion, or museum decolonisation. You don’t need to be an experienced writer; we are looking for your take on our exhibits. Confidence in using digital technology would be useful, but enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are just as important.
Availability

Work on this project will run from September to December 2023. This is the time frame we would like you commit for, but we can be extremely flexible in terms of creating and submitting your one-minute stories. Naturally, we recognise that people will be taking holidays over this period too.
