Travel Smart Travel Safe: Building Bus Confidence with Museum Visits
Brighton & Hove Buses and Brighton & Hove Museums are proud to announce the launch of Travel Smart Travel Safe, an innovative confidence-building programme aimed at empowering young students with the skills and knowledge to navigate bus travel safely and independently.
This unique initiative combines an educational workshop about bus travel with a memorable visit to the iconic Royal Pavilion or Brighton Museum, offering schools in the Brighton & Hove area an exceptional opportunity to enrich their students’ learning experiences.
Hedley Swain, CEO of Brighton & Hove Museums said:
“We’re delighted to partner with Brighton & Hove Buses on this innovative programme to support young people at such a critical stage in their development. By combining an engaging workshop on travel confidence with the unique educational experiences offered at the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Museum, we’re helping to equip Year 6 students with essential life skills while inspiring their curiosity about the city’s rich heritage. It’s a collaboration that not only fosters independence and safety but also connects our young people more deeply to their community.”
Travel Smart Travel Safe is open to all schools in Brighton & Hove and invites Year 6 students to participate in this free programme. Highlights include:
- A visit to the Brighton & Hove Buses Travel Hub on North Street for an engaging workshop designed to build confidence in using public transportation.
- A complimentary trip to either Brighton Museum or the Royal Pavilion, fostering cultural appreciation and learning.
This exciting new partnership between Brighton & Hove Buses and Brighton & Hove Museums exemplifies the organisations’ commitment to education, sustainability, and community engagement.
Schools are encouraged to take advantage of this free offering to support their students in developing lifelong skills.
The workshop provides crucial guidance for young people on how to travel safely and with confidence by bus across the city. Year 6 is the time when most young people move to larger schools that may be further away from home and require bus travel. It’s a crucial stage in their personal development when support in building their confidence can really help and lead to more independent and safer travel for school journeys and other times too such as meeting up with friends in town and attending after school activities.
The trip includes a free educational experience at Brighton Museum or the Royal Pavilion where the young people complete educational worksheets as they walk around.
At the Brighton & Hove Buses travel hub ,travel confidence building is provided in the form of an engaging workshop designed specifically for young people following feedback from local ambassador teachers. The session includes short films acted and narrated by young people from Downs Junior School along with lively discussions on journey planning, waiting at bus stops, boarding, and travelling by bus. Sessions usually last around 40 minutes and are completely free. What’s more Brighton & Hove Buses also provide free bus travel to Brighton Museum or the Royal Pavilion and back to the school.
Ed Wills, Managing Director for Brighton & Hove Buses said:
“As a major transport provider in the city we support children, students, parents, and guardians in getting to school, college, and university safely every day. We want to provide young people with excellent skills in travel planning and effective journey management so they can travel safely and with confidence to enjoy a fully connected life.”
Brighton & Hove Museums provide educational worksheets related to the exhibitions. Brighton & Hove Buses provide an educational booklet to take away after the session and free high visibility snap bands for safer travel at night.
The scheme is entirely funded by Brighton & Hove Buses and Brighton & Hove Museums.
