Good to Know

• Sessions run Tuesday to Thursday at Preston Manor.
• You can dress as Victorian servants and even choose Victorian names.
• Children are invited to write a letter of application for one of the following roles and hand it to Mr Beesley when you arrive:
  • Oddman chops wood, brings in coal, serves servants’ dinners
  • Footman answers the door, lays the table, polishes silver
  • Housemaid cleans rooms, lays fires, makes beds
  • Kitchen Maid helps Cook prepare food, cleans, scrubs tables

Allergy Information – Activities include

• Children will grate/grind mustard seeds, coriander seeds, dried cloves, nutmeg, black peppercorns.
• Children will weigh wheat-free macaroni.
• Children will handle dried lavender and rose petals.
• Educator will demonstrate with lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda.

Decolonising

• We introduce the British Empire and that the Victorians took many resources from Colonies.
• We show examples of people of colour in Victorian Brighton, such as Aina of the Yoruba people, and prominent musicians and sports people.
