The year is 1897, and Brighton’s most famous Manor House has opened its doors to… A School for Servants!
Your class will step into the past and learn what it was like to work for a wealthy family in Victorian times.
There’s lots to do – polish silver, make beds, grind spices, sweep floors, beat rugs and much more. It’s hard work, and Mr Beesley, the butler, needs keen, cheerful servants who aren’t afraid to get busy!
Good to Know
- Sessions run Tuesday to Thursday at Preston Manor.
- You can come dressed as Victorian servants and even choose Victorian names for the day!
Allergy Information – Activities include
- Children will grate/grind mustard seeds, coriander seeds, dried cloves, nutmeg, black peppercorns.
- Children will weigh wheat-free macaroni.
- Children will handle dried lavender and rose petals.
- Educator will demonstrate with lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda.
What You Will Learn
- I will enjoy my time and have fun.
- I will bring the past to life through activities and roleplay.
- I will try out real jobs that servants once did in the Manor.
- I will find out how people lived and worked in Victorian times.
Decolonising
- We introduce the British Empire and that the Victorians took many resources from Colonies.
- We show examples of people of colour in Victorian Brighton, such as Aina of the Yoruba people, and prominent musicians and sports people.
