Brighton & Hove Museums are currently carrying out inspection, conservation cleaning, and repairs as part of our ongoing commitment to preserving Brighton’s most iconic building.

This work includes assessing the structural stability and gently steam-cleaning the stone and rendered surface. We will use conservation techniques, make necessary repairs, and redecorate the painted areas. This ensures that the Pavilion remains in excellent condition for future generations.

This part of the Royal Pavilion is the work of architect John Nash, who extended the
building and added Indian-inspired and Gothic features between 1815 and 1823.
Behind this façade are some of the most private rooms of the Royal Pavilion. It was
the last part of the Pavilion to be finished under Nash, in the early 1820s. A tunnel,
built in early 1822, runs from here to what was the Royal Stables (now the Dome).

In a watercolour by Augustus Charles Pugin from c1822 you can see it being framed by shrubs and trees to either side. The great tented roof of the Music Room soars behind it.
