John Cooper to Receive an Award from the Geologists’ Association

John A. Cooper

This Friday (9 May 2025) John A. Cooper (Emeritus Keeper of Natural Sciences at the Booth Museum of Natural History) will receive an award from the Geologists’ Association for ‘services to Geology.’

The event of the Geologists’ Association is hosted in Burlington House, London by the Geological Society.

John receives the award on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of him founding and chairing the Brighton & Hove Geological Society.

The award is called the Foulerton Award and broadly it is presented annually recognising “work of merit connected with the Association”.

The nomination specifically mentions John’s founding and continuous Chairmanship of the Brighton & Hove Geological Society for 40 years. The society was initially based at the Booth Museum, but now holds its meetings in the West Blatchington Windmill. It is affiliated to the Geologists’ Association and is concerned with all matters relating to the earth sciences, especially with Sussex relevance.

John founded the society to serve the local community with geological interests. The Booth’s geological collections are of international significance and as Keeper of Geology he was able to use them to highlight relevant matters of scientific interest – fossils, minerals and rocks.

The Society and the Booth interact with other organisations with geological interests such as Brighton University, Sussex University and the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
