Visitors to the Royal Pavilion will have a rare chance to hear how King George IV’s own piano is tuned during a special lecture and live demonstration on Monday 22 September in the Music Room.

Early keyboard conservator Cesar Hernandez Martinez will begin with a short talk at 11am, introducing the fascinating art of “historic temperaments” and explaining how tuning techniques differed in the early 19th century. He will also highlight the contrasts between the fortepiano and the modern piano.

From 11:30am, Cesar will set to work tuning the Pavilion’s historic Tomkison piano, a meticulous, two-hour process that guests are welcome to observe for as long as they wish. Admission is free with a Royal Pavilion ticket, and free for members.

This event is in preparation for two evenings of live performance in the Music Room: “Hearing Colour – An Evening of Classical Music” on Friday 26 September and Friday 3 October, where audiences can enjoy the restored instrument in all its glory.

Tickets for the evening concerts are £48 (members £40).
