Magic and Wonder…

As part of the Days of Wonder project, young people attend the monthly Wonder Club at Hove Museum. Led by Chahine Fellahi and Louise Conway, the sessions provide an opportunity for hands-on creativity using analogue film and projection equipment. For the December meet up I was invited to hold a magic lantern slide making workshop.

After a brief introduction to the history of the magic lantern, the participants set about making their slides using card frames and clear acetate, coloured in with marker pens. The brief was to create a story – beginning, middle and end – in three slides. Once the slides were finished, I projected them with the lantern, while the artist narrated their story.

There was a great display of imagination. The stories involved comedy, tragedy, contemplation and even music. A lot of fun was had by all, and here you can see the magical results.
