Ghost hunting on Brighton beach?

Sepia photograph showing fishermen on Brighton beach with a net and a hut in the background.

This photograph shows a group of fishermen working on Brighton beach in the early 1860s. It was taken by Edward Fox Junior, an artist who had recently taken up photography.

Ghost hunting

Early photography often required long exposure times. The photographer may have needed several seconds of light in order to capture a good image.

One problem with long exposure times is that it distorts moving people. As the photograph partially records both an object and the person who steps in front of it, the result is a ghostly looking figure.
