Tomi’s work sparks important philosophical questions on what it means to see and be seen as complex and diverse humans. Through his photographs, we see the physical and abstract representations of what it means to mask and protect ourselves as vulnerable humans in this world. This work is a testament to the incredible physical creations of Black artists who seek to explore the ever-changing sense of self. Here’s some words from Tomi:

“I am a Trinidadian-British artist working in both 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and mixed media forms. In my work, I address concepts of culture, philosophy and the human experience. I seek to examine the complex interplay of my Caribbean upbringing and my British roots. Through this examination, I specifically focus on issues affecting how we as humans interact with the world around us. My art strongly focuses on the abstracted human form as a vehicle to express my views on humanity. At the centre of my art, I seek to explore my ever-changing sense of self, I seek to create art that inspires dialogue, introspection, nuanced thought and illustrates the beauty and problems behind cultural and social dynamics. I hope to create something that says something uniquely about our shared experience of living as conscious beings on this planet.”
