Black Lives Matter Mrisi

Song – Mrisi

Arts Council Funded Southern African Instrumentalist, Pianist & Vocalist Mrisi is a multifaceted artist who showcases a varied musical background and a sensitivity to music, which results in tracks with substance.

The development of his music unifies his heritage and areas of influence. Sounds from traditional South African rhythms to Jazz piano and grassroots Hip Hop, which can be heard alongside gritty British narrative, drill and house. He fuses evocative sounds of South Africa and his ancestral language Shangaan Tsonga, with current British rap, poetry and stories that range from immigration to ‘black lives matter’ to conflicts of identity. “..truly poetic flair.” – Complex Magazine.

This song was picked by curator Erin James, who has a particularly personal connection to the song, as she listened to it and used it as a resource and reminder of local artists sharing uplifting messages of hope through music. Erin also played the song on a Black Lives Matter Special during her time as a radio presenter for Platform B. She remembers converting a small cupboard at home into a DJ booth and having a little cry behind the decks listening to the powerful message of this song.

You can listen Erin’s radio show on PlatformB radio via Mixcloud.
