Photographed on 13 June 2020, Diensen Pamben’s photo series reclaims protest imagery from the mainstream gaze. Using techniques drawn from surveillance aesthetics, he reverses the watcher-watched dynamic to foreground dignity, intention, and collective power. His experience working as a press photographer informed how he took this image, Pamben brings a critical eye and deep compassion to his documentation. The Protester refuses to flatten the experience of protest into chaos—it honours it as organised resistance, emotional truth, and a space of care. This work asks us to look again—and look deeper.
