Dance like an Edwardian at Preston Manor
Just announced! Step into the elegance of Edwardian society this Sunday 14 September with drop-in tea dance lessons in the Drawing Room at 2pm, part of Downton by the Sea: An Edwardian Weekend at Preston Manor (12–14 September 2025).
Bringing this Thé Dansante history to life at Preston Manor is Stuart Barrett, who has appeared in multiple Downton Abbey films including the latest film Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Stuart is an accomplished dancer with experience in Ballroom, Latin, Disco, and Showdance, and he will lead Downton-style dance classes, helping visitors of all ages experience the elegance and fun of Edwardian dance firsthand.
Tea dances were one of the most charming social innovations of the early 20th century. At a time when strict rules around chaperones and courtship began to relax, these afternoon or early evening gatherings allowed young men and women to meet, mingle, and dance without waiting for a grand ball. Combining the tradition of afternoon tea with lively music and dancing, tea dances quickly became a fashionable and spirited way to enjoy social life in Edwardian England.
The tea dance is just one highlight of the Downton by the Sea weekend, which celebrates the release of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and draws inspiration from the very first episode of the series. While Preston Manor was not a filming location for the movie, it provided the inspiration for the visitor experience and offers an atmospheric backdrop reminiscent of Downton Abbey—from grand drawing rooms to bustling servants’ quarters.
