New for 2026!
Gender Stories
31 January to 12 April 2026
BRIGHTON MUSEUM
Free with Brighton Museum admission, members free
This exhibition promises to be a thought-provoking journey with Gender Stories, that sensitively begins to examine the fluid, multifaceted world of gender across cultures, eras, and personal experiences. It asks: What is gender? How do we experience it? Who defines it? What could it’s future look like?
Challenging rigid definitions and binary narratives, the exhibition dives deep into the intricate connections between sex, gender, sexuality, and identity. Visitors can discover how these ideas have been mythologised, stereotyped, expressed – and sometimes concealed – through art, history, politics, and daily life over time.
This compelling display brings together diverse objects and artworks from Brighton & Hove Museums, Bristol Museums, and National Museums Liverpool. By combining community stories with insights from gender theory, Gender Stories highlights both the joys and struggles of gender identity.
This offering will explore these complex questions together. It is for visitors at the beginning of a gender journey, and those continuing, or seeking to understand a gender journey. The museum will be a meaningful space for reflection and discovery. A MAGNET partnership exhibition, with Art Fund support and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Preston Manor - new for 2026
This group-friendly attraction re-opens on Saturday 14 March 2026 to celebrate Mothering Sunday. Feel the Downton Fever and explore the “upstairs-
downstairs” life of Edwardian society.
New for 2026!
The top floor reopens to reveal an Edwardian nursery and the original bathrooms of Charles Thomas Stanford. The first floor features a new history archive gallery, providing fresh insights into the house’s rich past.
Welcome to Preston Manor, an Edwardian estate that brings history to life. Once home to Charles and Ellen Stanford, this grand house exudes glamour, opulence, and intrigue. Step back to 1912, the year of the Titanic disaster, and experience a day in the lives of the Stanfords and their loyal staff.
With roots dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, Preston Manor was transformed in 1905 by architect Charles Stanley Peach. Its blend of history, grandeur, and elegance offers a glimpse into the world of the Edwardian elite.
Explore the "below stairs" world of hard-working servants, from the butler to the scullery maid. Discover the inner workings of the manor, from the bustling kitchen to the servants' hall, where long hours were spent maintaining the estate's high standards.
Every corner of Preston Manor tells a unique story. Whether you're intrigued by the supernatural in the Cleves Room or captivated by the Stanfords' tales, this is your chance to step into history.
Groups! Don't miss the Manor Tearoom by Café Rust, located in one of Ellen Stanford’s favourite rooms and under the watchful eye of her 124 ‘Dogs of Fo’ collection.
