Brighton & Hove is home to our National Elm Collection of around 17,000 elm trees, with the Royal Pavilion & Garden looking after a vital micro-collection of significant elms. As part our exciting Garden restoration project, we are documenting and interpreting our renowned Elm Collection to be enjoyed by the public. We walked with international elm expert Peter Bourne around these significant trees and captured some of his excellent stories.

We invite you to attend a taster digital audio tour to hear more about these historic trees and their part as precious heritage artefacts within our local landscape.
- Hear about the famous Brace Elm from 1776
- The Weeping Wych Elm which saw Queen Victoria’s Jubilee
- Ulmus 260 the ‘Frankenstein Elm’
- As well as other specimens
- Take time during your session to explore the Garden and see the plants and wildlife living here
This taster tour is part of a larger collection of audio interpretations we look forward to sharing with you in the future and your attendance is greatly appreciated.
What to bring: Personal smartphone and headphones. If wet weather, please bring an umbrella or waterproof jacket.
Access: The walk will take place in the Garden, mainly on the paths with some listening on the grass, the terrain is generally flat, and the tour is wheelchair accessible.
Listening time: Approx. 30 minutes. Dr Anna Edmonds the Garden Experience and Interpretation Officer will guide you through the listening process and be on hand for any support and questions during the event. Please feel free to stay longer for a chat!
Additional information: ‘Embracing the Elms’ can be enjoyed both personally and socially. If you would like to buddy up to listen together, Anna has headphone splitters available to borrow for shared listening on one phone, just let her know when you arrive.
If you don’t have any access to listening equipment but would like to attend, please drop Anna an email and she will be more than happy to help you. She has a small collection of equipment which can be borrowed during the session, please let her know in advance when you book your slot.
