Lighting up the Adelaide Corridor

The Chinese wallpaper is illuminated in the Adelaide corridor

For the first time since their installation around 200 years ago, part of the Chinese wallpaper in the Adelaide corridor is now illuminated.

A Paul Mellon grant from the Centre for Studies in British Art was used to purchase the state-of-the-art museum lighting, and the Trust covered the installation costs. The installation was not straightforward, but the team and GM Monk (external contractors) did a great job installing the lighting and concealing the cables to make the wallpaper more visible.

The lighting is set to low lux levels to protect the paper from fading and is switched on with a motion sensor to limit light exposure to the paper again.

Next, the team will install an updated text panel with further information about this wallpaper. A small display of Chinese wallpaper from our archives will also be displayed.
