One Old Master, 14 young people, 15 self-portraits.

Brighton Museum is delighted to be hosting a painting by the Dutch Old Master Rembrandt Van Rijn. Self Portrait at the Age of 34, 1640, is on display as part of the National Gallery’s bicentenary National Treasures tour.

Rembrandt’s exquisite self-portrait is a masterclass in artistic time travel. He plays with ideas and themes from the past to create an image of himself for the future.

Alongside the Rembrandt, Brighton Museum teamed up with Photoworks to produce Hey, Rembrandt!  Mentored by the award-winning photographer Alejandra Carles-Tolra, 14 local young people created their own photographic self-portraits.

Each participant explored the themes of identity, perception, and self-projection through time and space. Whilst consciously curating their own image for a modern audience, they imagined themselves in an artistic conversation with Rembrandt.

The National Gallery’s birthday celebration involves 12 simultaneous exhibitions at 12 museums and galleries across the UK. More than half the UK population will be within an hour’s journey of a National Gallery masterpiece. Come and see yours!
