As part of the National Gallery National Treasures tour, Brighton & Hove Museums are delighted to be hosting a painting by Rembrandt; Self Portrait at the Age of 34, 1640.

On 10 May 2024 the National Gallery will be 200 years old.  As part of the celebrations 12 simultaneous exhibitions are opening that day – at 12 museums and galleries across the UK. Rembrandt Van Rjin (1606 – 1669), was a Dutch, Golden Age painter, printmaker and draughtsman.

Alongside this incredible masterpiece Brighton Museum is showing photographic work by a group of young people. In a collaboration between Brighton & Hove Museums and Photoworks young people have worked with artist Alejandra Carles-Tolra to create work that expresses how they would like to be seen by their peers, when, like Rembrandt, they reach the age of 34. The resulting images create an exciting dialogue between a long-dead old master and vibrant, young future talent. This innovative body of work compliments the Rembrandt painting and subverts and challenges the traditional conventions of self-portraiture.
