Paintings on the Move

Three oil paintings in our collection have recently gone on loan to two exhibitions.

The first, Kitchen Interior, c.1934, by Harold Harvey has been included in ‘The Exceptional Harold Harvey’ at Penlee House, Penzance.

Harvey (1874- 1941) was a member of the influential Newlyn School of artists in Cornwall, at their most active between 1880-1940.

We have other artists associated with the Newlyn School in our collection, such as Dod Procter, Gluck, Lamorna Birch, Laura Knight and Stanhope Forbes.

If you are heading down to Cornwall the exhibition runs until 29 September.

Our other paintings did not have to travel quite so far …

Still Life of Eggs, Tomatoes and Mushrooms, c.1928, by Frances Hodgkins and The Dutch Doll, 1926, by Mark Gertler have gone to Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.

They feature in ‘The Shape of Things: Still life in British Art’ (11 May – 20 October 2024). This exhibition examines the still life genre: how it represents life’s challenges and influenced artists from the 17th century to the present.

It will show artists including Hurvin Anderson, Vanessa Bell, Edward Burra, Patrick Caulfield, Lucian Freud, Gluck, Duncan Grant, Richard Hamilton, Mona Hatoum, Jann Haworth, David Hockney, Lee Miller, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, William Nicholson, Eric Ravilious, Anwar Jalal Shemza, William Scott, Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Rachel Whiteread and Clare Woods.

We have artworks by several of these artists in our collection. For instance, come and see William Scott’s painting Girl and a Birdcage, c.1947, and Boat Race, Eric Ravilious’s 1938 bowl designed for Wedgwood. They are in the 20th Century Gallery in Brighton Museum, alongside other significant modern artists.

If you’re visiting Penlee Gallery or Pallant House, be sure to check out our paintings in their exhibitions!
