Cultural Icons: Remaking a Popular Pottery Tradition

This exhibition has now ended

28 November 2019 to 1 March 2020
Free admission

Celebrities, actors, royalty, politicians, military men and religious figures were all prominent subjects of Victorian Staffordshire flat-back figures. Inspired by this popular pottery tradition, six ceramic artists, Joanne Ayre, Christie Brown, Claire Curneen, Stephen Dixon, Ingrid Murphy and Matt Smith, have responded by making contemporary Cultural Icons. These sit alongside original Victorian portrait figures from our collections, and analytical drawings of historical flat-backs by John Hewitt.

An exhibition from the British Ceramics Biennial 2019.
