Meet collections staff and find out about extraordinary Brighton & Hove residents that have ‘aged (often unconventionally) well!”
Featuring:
- James Doughty (c1818-1913) – actor and clown; who with his trained dogs entertained crowds on the West Pier into his 90s;
- Ron Cunningham aka “The Great Omani” (1915-2007) – escapologist; in his 90s performed his last stunt in the Bedford Tavern, Brighton;
- Phoebe Hessel (1713-1821) – who in her youth disguised herself as a man to serve in the British Army and lived to 108 years old;
- Gwen Moffat (1924 -) mountaineer and writer, known for often climbing barefoot.
