Step into the imaginary world of Darktown Cabaret and craft a miniature stage set for an evening at the legendary Mermaid Café. In this workshop, you’ll design a “toy theatre” inspired by a song chosen from our magic hat, bringing its dark, playful atmosphere to life. Using our provided stage box, you’ll quickly create dramatic cut-out characters, props, and painted backdrops, building scenes that are absurd, eerie, or whimsically chaotic. Let lyrics become speech bubbles, phrases turn into props, and play with surreal proportions. With paint, collage, and whatever materials you wish, you’ll set the stage for the night’s cabaret performance.
About the Artist
Born and bred in Fife, Jonny Hannah is a Southampton-based printmaker, illustrator and commercial designer. His work is known for its vibrant, bold style and he regularly exhibits around the UK as well as having work published worldwide. Hannah runs the eclectic Cakes & Ale Press, where he creates and publishes printed works including screenprints, handmade books, posters and ephemera.
Hannah is deeply influenced by music, especially jazz, folk and blues and his work often explores the connections between music, pop culture and visual art, creating artwork that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. His work celebrates his passions for jazz heroes, folk culture, storytelling, typography and the written word, often transporting us to a mysterious seaside location which he calls ‘Darktown’. Darktown is home to the Mermaid Cafe, and that is exactly where this workshop begins… and ends… at the Darktown cabaret show… See you there!
