Not just Christmas cards, Victorian’s also liked to send New Year’s cards.

A feathered messenger is here…

Owls often appear in Victorian festive cards, even though they are more commonly associated with wisdom.

This owl, perched on a crescent moon, looks unusually wide-eyed. Perhaps he is shocked to see two of his feathers plucked out.

Or maybe he is wondering if you really can ‘sagely’ wish someone a ‘Happy New Year’.
