Royal Pavilion Garden Plant of the Month, September 2019: Physalis alkekengi

For the changing season, take a look at the Physalis alkekengi, the Chinese Lantern.

The Lantern originates from West Asia, Japan and is a vigorous, spreading rhizomatous perennial. It has nodding, bell shaped, cream flowers produced from leaf axils in mid-summer, followed by bright orange scarlet berries enclosed in papery seed calyces.

They can be found throughout the garden and on the beautiful Chinese hand painted wallpaper in the Royal Pavilion.
