The theme of May 2019’s image gallery of the month is the West Pier.
The original structure of the pier was built in 1866 and many additional features were added over the next 50 years, including a bandstand in 1875, a pavilion in 1893 (which can still be seen today) and a concert hall in 1916. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by a storm in 2002 and two fires in 2003. The pier may now be in a ruined state, but it is still one of Brighton’s most iconic landmarks.
This image gallery includes photographs, oil paintings, postcards and magic lantern slides of the West Pier.
