Volunteer Opportunity: Royal Pavilion Archive Digitisation

We are currently looking for a capable, reliable and conscientious volunteer to assist with the digitisation of the Conservation archives held in the workshops in the Royal Pavilion.

This will involve cataloguing, documentation, digitisation, scanning, transcribing and other related collections work.

What skills are we looking for?

  • be computer literate
  • a quick learner, specifically within technical, computer based tasks
  • have a methodical approach to tasks
  • be able to maintain accurate data input over an extended period of time
  • have flexible attitude and be self motivated
  • demonstrate good time management skills

Training on museum & cataloguing software will be provided; specifically the program ‘Mimsy XG’ used widely by many museum and arts institutions as a collections database. Any existing experience with the above, or similar, would be highly desirable. We have a digitisation process in place and the post is open due to our current volunteer leaving. Additionally confidence and self-motivation is also needed as occasionally you may work without supervision.

The hours are flexible and ideally will be either on a Monday or Tuesday.

What will you gain from volunteering?

Support: As a volunteer you will be supported by the museum’s dedicated Volunteer Manager and staff within the Conservation department.

You will receive on the job training in the collection’s management software; Mimsy XG and the relevant museum documentation standards.

Experience: The opportunity will provide valuable and competitive skills to the individual and proven experience of the museum & heritage sector. We really value volunteers and the contributions they make and hope that this experience will help those wanting to enter the museums and heritage sector.

Expenses: All travel expenses incurred travelling to and from your volunteering role will be reimbursed in line with our volunteer policy. Your supervisor will be able to go through this with you at your induction. Claims are usually made on a monthly basis.

Reference: We are more than happy to provide a reference on request for any future job applications.
