“if I listen I forget, if I see I remember, If I do I understand”, Bruno Munari
We believe it is important for any individual to take time to get out of the daily routine to look, imagine, learn, create and ‘play’ with the arts. Why don’t you pack more into your summer and join our crafty activities for families and children of 3-8 years throughout the school holidays? You can enjoy a new experience each week with our rich programme of activities where we will focus our offers on something really special! We will provide a fun museum experience that will connect all the family with art and nature through using the five senses. You will be free to creatively explore, experiment and play with ideas and materials, accompanied by our great learning facilitator Nadya Derungs.
We have plenty in store for lively kids and fun-seeking families. From exciting natural discovery connected with drawing, sticking, painting, weaving and collage making to thrilling tastes and fragrances smelling. This summer is going to be a complete immersion in a multi-sensory experience.
Our education room will be extended and connected with the garden that surrounds the museum. Children will be encouraged to go outside to be inspired by nature. Natural elements, in the form of sticks, leaves or flowers, in addition to natural perfumes and exclusive fruity tastes, will be the centre of our attention during the workshops.
There will be the opportunity to weave colourful flower garlands and lei using raffia, fabrics and wild flowers. We will paint and print multy-sensory summery pictures and still life using various traditional and experimental techniques (for istance fresh flowers, fruits and leaves).
During the collage sessions we will focus our attention on the use of the senses of touch and smell, children will have texture papers, lavender flowers, herbs and spices available for them to use for sticking experimentation. We will test ourself in making and decorating easy and fun fabric bunting with vivid ribbon.
At the top of the page I shared with you a quote from the Italian artist and designer Bruno Munari (1907-1998). Munari was a passionate researcher in educational approaches. His playful and extremely creative methods were used in educational workshops for children (and adults), where he called for experimentation and discovery, leaving plenty of room for creative action.
Action is the best way to understand, especially in the context of a museum, as they are not just places for transmission of culture but additionally a site for the construction of cultural knowledge and shared values. Everybody, both children and adults, can experience the arts; the most important thing is to take a challenge and do it.
So make family connections through art and craft against a background of summer music and nature sounds, use all your senses and immerse yourself in the atmosphere! Drop in and make your way to these family friendly, inclusive activities at Hove Museum.
