We have worked with Year 6 children from Moulsecoomb Primary School and the University of Brighton’s Arts & Humanities Faculties to make a film about the history of Brighton. In just nine minutes this short film covers the story of the city — from when dinosaurs roamed east Brighton, until the children were born in 2003/4.
The class built on a recent local history project and learned all aspects of short filmmaking, from camera angles, editing, storyboarding and scripting to narration, costumes and image selection. The children spent two days at the University’s TVS studio, where they learned to use the equipment on the studio floor and in the control room. They then managed all aspects of the three-camera production, adapting their script, using the auto-cue and organising visuals and props. Their film is now available on YouTube and will be displayed in our museums, as well as being shown at other schools’ assemblies.
