Brighton News Story – 2 December, 1793: Prince lays first stone of new chapel

On Monday last the first stone of the intended new chapel in North Street, Brighton, was laid by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales; about one o’clock the Prince, accompanied by Capt Churchill, Mr Hudson the vicar and Mr Saunders the architect, came to the spot, which was surrounded by all the principal inhabitants of the town, and by a brilliant display of beauty and fashion.  Among the ladies were Mrs Fitzherbert, Miss Pigot, Miss Graham &c. &c.

    While I do not usually comment on these news items, I do nevertheless find them very interesting. There is something very immediate about these contemporary accounts of long ago events. How magical to visualize the actual laying of the foundation stone of the Chapel Royal! Oh, for a time machine!
