Brighton News Story – 26 October, 1789: Smugglers throw casks overboard during chase

Last Tuesday a great number of casks containing spiritous liquor, were seen floating at sea, off Brighton, supposed to be thrown over-board by some smuggling cutter, while under chase.  Several of the fishermen put off in their boats to take them up, and land them, not however for the benefit of themselves, but for the revenue Officers; who planted themselves on the shore to receive them.
