Members of the Positive Hair Day project team visited Brighton Museum & Art Gallery last week.
They were interested in objects from the World Art collection that relate to issues around Black hair and styling. They’re creating an exhibition of hair-related family histories and stories from the Black and mixed race community in Brighton & Hove using family photos and recorded interviews.
The Museum’s 1990s collection of barbers’ boards from Kenya – kinyozi – got everyone excited, especially as one of the project partners is Shae Shae Creations Afro & European Hair and Beauty Salon. Here’s a snap of a Shae Shae client next to one of the boards…
