One winter’s night, a snowman comes to life and an unforgettable adventure begins.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Raymond Briggs’ much loved classic picture book, come and discover the magic in this exhibition of the original illustrations.
In 1982 The Snowman was adapted for the screen and some of the original hand-drawn cels, celluloid sheets used for traditional animation, are also on display.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary, children’s author Michael Morpurgo has reimagined Raymond Briggs’ original tale as a chapter book with illustrations by Robin Shaw. Robin Shaw has also created a short animation especially for the anniversary celebrations that will premiere in the gallery from 4 December.
Award-winning visual artist Helen Marshall has created a portrait of The Snowman and James from photographs submitted by members of the public. The final image is now on display in the gallery, for more information visit www.thepeoplespicture.com
Also on show are new one-off illustrations of The Snowman by nine leading children’s book illustrators including Quentin Blake, Shirley Hughes and Chris Riddell paying tribute to the book’s creator Raymond Briggs. The illustrations are being auctioned off and all money goes directly to Raymond Briggs’s chosen charity, Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, of which he is a Patron.
