A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling is one of Hans Holbein the Younger’s earliest English portraits and it is one of his most engaging and beautiful works. This touching portrait holds many secrets to decode. Alongside this 16th century masterpiece, the functions and meanings of portraiture from the period will be explored through a selection of works from our own collection.
The Masterpiece Tour reflects the National Gallery’s commitment to promoting the understanding, study and appreciation of its collection to as wide an audience as possible. A major Gallery painting is touring the UK each year between 2018 and 2020. This year, Holbein’s A Lady with a Squirrel and a Starling (Anne Lovell?) has travelled the length and breadth of the country and will be on its final stop before returning home, so don’t miss this unique opportunity to see it here in Brighton.
