May to December 2019
Mary Philadelphia Merrifield (1804–1889) was a remarkable self-taught artist, naturalist and writer who spent most of her life in Brighton. She made a significant contribution to colour and pigment research in the 1840s. Later she was actively involved in the creation of the natural history collections at Brighton Museum and became an expert in marine algae.
This small display celebrates Merrifield’s contribution to scientific research by women in the 19th century.
