Southampton City Art Gallery, Words of the World
Southampton City Art Gallery houses an internationally renowned art collection, spanning six centuries of European art history. The City Art Gallery is part of the Southampton City Council Arts and Heritage Service, which explores through the buildings and artefacts in its collections the City’s rich and fascinating cultural heritage.
A group of about 15 young people, aged 14-25 years, will consider the history of Southampton as a ‘Gateway to the World’. Spending time in the city’s heritage locations, including the Art Gallery and Sea City Museum, they will take part in a number of workshops led by an artist-educator, which will enable them to respond to artefacts with slam poetry, song, rap lyrics and film. They will develop an exhibition, which will display objects from Southampton’s collections, together with their responses.
The exhibition ran from 21 July to 31 August 2012.
