To complement the major redevelopment of the World Stories gallery at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, four World Stories regional partnership projects took place with museums in the South East:
• Bexhill Museum: A Global Gathering
• Hastings Museum and Art Gallery: Plains Speaking
• Southampton City Art Gallery: Words of the World
• The Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology (The University of Reading): Ure View
The projects all engaged with young people aged 14 – 25 to create exhibitions inspired by collections from across the globe.
All the collections feature artefacts that originate from, or show the UK’s interaction with other parts of the world from Native American materials, to objects from Tibet, Africa, India, Australasia and Papua New Guinea to items from ancient Greece and Egypt.
The regional projects are working in partnership with the young people on the reinterpretation and redisplay of their museum collections. The exhibitions use a range of media from sculpture, to slam poetry to digital animation alongside the objects to interpret and display their responses. Creative workshops sessions have been held with the young people to develop their ideas and work on the forms of display.
