Extended to 13 March 2022

A display featuring rarely seen designs for the Royal Pavilion interiors dating from the early 19th century has been extended until March 2022.

Tying in with the exhibition A Prince’s Treasure at the Royal Pavilion, this display of 50 original designs and related objects, gives visitors an intimate insight into how the Royal Pavilion interiors were created, from first design ideas to the finished Chinoiserie schemes under George IV.

In 1801 George IV hired a team of decorators, to help transform the Royal Pavilion into an oriental-looking pleasure dome.

Father and son team, John and Frederick Crace, were the key figures of several generations of the Crace family firm of decorators who worked at the Royal Pavilion for nearly 100 years.

Many of their original design drawings survive in our collection and are shown, alongside Asian porcelain, glass paintings, hand-painted wallpaper and images of China that inspired them.

The Pavilion is a great example of how the art of interior decoration became a new leisure interest in the early nineteenth century. In the 1820s, a local historian described the Pavilion interiors as resembling an ‘enchanted palace’, reminiscent of the One Thousand and One Night stories.
