This is an albumen photographic tourist print collected by the Stanford family and shows the ruined House of Pansa, excavated at Pompeii. . Pompeii was abandoned after the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and was buried under up to 10 feet of ash; it was the ash that preserved the treasures later discovered at Pompeii. Printed in a band below the bottom edge of the print is, Pompei Casa Pansa, Edile di Pompei, this roughly translates to Pompei Pansa House, Building of Pompei, and the albumen print number 35.
