Photographic Print

This is an albumen photographic tourist print collected by the Stanford family and shows tombs found in the remains of Pompeii. Pompeii was abandoned after the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and was buried under up to 10 feet of ash; it was the ash that preserved the treasures later discovered at Pompeii. The print is of large decorative tombs in a graveyard; one is carved with the picture of a sailing ship. Printed in a band below the bottom edge of the print is, Pompei Tombe, and the albumen print number 1230.
