Brooch

This mourning brooch is in the form of a cherub holding a wreath. It is made of Vulcanite, heat hardened rubber, which was invented in 1843 by Thomas Hancock. As the supply of Whitby jet struggled to meet the Victorian demand for black objects, Vulcanite bacame a popular substitute.
